“Did you find a body?” the reporter shouted the question to the commissioner of police, Collin Hughes as he was walking away.

He suddenly stopped and turned back around. Carolyn dreaded the possible answer that might come out of his mouth.

“I want to answer that,” Commissioner Hughes said. “We have not found a body. I repeat. We have not found Sara. So far, I’ve uncovered no evidence to suggest that Sara Morgan is not alive. As far as I’m concerned, we’re still treating this as a missing person case.”

Carolyn let out a huge sigh of relief. It seemed as though everyone exhaled at the same time. Probably all holding their breaths just as she’d been doing.

“You said you found something that’s related to Sara’s disappearance. Can you tell us what that is?”

“Like I said before, I have no comment. This is an ongoing investigation. I want to assure the public that I’m doing everything in my power to find Sara.”

Carolyn instantly liked the commissioner. He spoke in a British accent. She was drawn to police dramas on television. Several originated from England and Ireland, so she heard that accent a lot.

But there was more to it than an accent. Carolyn considered herself a good judge of character. The commissioner seemed like an honest and decent man. He came across as sincere. The fact that he was optimistic about finding Sara encouraged her. And he mentioned a lead. She had no idea what the lead was, but it sounded promising. Enough to put a lot of resources behind it. That’s no small thing, considering how many people were at the scene working this late in the evening.

She decided not to go back to the room. If those people were willing to stay up late working on behalf of her daughter, so would she. No way she was going to bed until she learned what the commissioner had found. She’d stay up all night if she had to.

Before anyone could comment on the new developments, Sean’s phone rang.

“It’s Commissioner Hughes,” Sean said, after looking at the caller ID on his phone. “Hello Commissioner. Can I put you on hold for a second?”

Sean pushed the hold button and then asked everyone to leave except Carolyn. When the room was empty, he put the commissioner on speaker.

“Sorry about that. There were some reporters in the room. I didn’t want them to hear our conversation.”

“That’s a good idea.” Carolyn recognized the voice on the phone as the same one on the television.

“My wife, Carolyn, is here with me,” Sean added.

“Hello, Mrs. Morgan. It’s my pleasure to meet you.”

“I wish it was under better circumstances,” Carolyn replied.

“I do as well. I wanted to let you know what was going on at Rum Point. I assume you must’ve heard the news since a reporter is already there asking you questions.”

“We saw you talking to the reporter,” Sean responded. “What have you found?”

“This is part of why I didn’t want the press involved so soon. It’s better if we can conduct our investigation in private, away from the press.
